CIRCUMSTANTIAL: Alternatively Ayato can be particularly manipulative, and may utilize information given to him by IC means in underhanded ways in order to achieve his own personal goals. He is also not above contracting others to do the dirty work for him, either willingly or without their knowledge of his involvement.
It is also implied within game canon that he can utilize stationary forms of water to allow him to visually sense the beating of one's heart, which in turn could allow him to infer whether or not someone is possibly lying to him. This of course relies upon the presence of something like a teacup or for the character in question to be within a body of water, and is not something he can simply do on command otherwise.
